[+]How many people live there?
Blazer Hall will accommodate up to 753 residents, including approximately 30 staff members. Two bedroom / two bath suites are designed for 4 students. Three bedroom / three bath suites are designed for 6 students.
[+]Do I have to choose a meal plan?
UAB requires all students (residents and commuting) to participate in a meal plan. Freshmen must select from one of two plan options. Plans are sold through the UAB Campus Card office (205-996-6273). Other details are available online at www.uabdining.com.
Meal plan options for resident students are as follows:

[+]Is parking available?
Yes! There is a parking deck with 1,300 spaces and a large parking lot located directly beside Blazer Hall. Contact UAB Parking and Transportation Services for details by calling 205-934-3513.
[+]Can I request a roommate/suitemates?
Yes, depending on space available all requests will be given the highest consideration. Indicate your roommate preference on your application, or send an email with the name of your roommate preference to us at ttaylor08@uab.edu To verify this is a mutually-acceptable assignment, both students must make an independent request, in writing, for this arrangement.
[+]Will you send me a bill each month for rent?
Your student can access his or her account on BlazerNet at any time. We do not send monthly invoices since we do not have monthly payments.
[+]When is my first payment due?
AFTER paying the $250 pre-payment, the remaining balance will be $4,350 This amount may be paid in one of two ways:
1) In full when you move in, OR
2) Pay $2,050 in the fall (1/2 on August 27 and 1/2 by September 30) and $2,300 in January. Please consult the UAB Student Accounting deadlines for rent payments and late fees.
[+]Can I pay my bill with a credit card? Is there an extra charge?
We accept Master Card or VISA and there is a 2.5% service fee. The exception to this fee is when paying your rent to UAB Student Accounting, no addtional fee will be assessed. For all other fees paid directly to the hall, the service fee will apply.
[+]How much more does it cost to stay here than off campus?
Other freshmen housing options at UAB cost the same as Blazer hall. Blazer Hall is the designated, on-campus freshmen residence hall for UAB students.
By comparison, the total 9-month cost of room, utilities, and meals on campus is typically less than equal accommodations off-campus.
[+]What utilities are included in my rent?
Leases include water, sewer, electricity/heat, cable TV w/ HEAT movie channel, high-speed internet (T1) and Wifi.
[+]Can I use my financial aid?
Be sure to review the documentation for your specific grant, loan, or scholarship to make sure. Talk with your parents or the Office of Student Financial Aid if you have questions about how much of your housing costs may be covered by loans, scholarships, grants, etc.
In most cases, student aid that allows for campus housing could be used towards your lease at Blazer Hall.
[+]What is the cost?
For the 2010-11 academic year, Blazer Hall leases for $2,500 per semester, payable to UAB in installments (fall & spring) for a total of $5,000. Although rent is due in two payments each semester, the monthly comparison would be about $500/month, including utilities, free high-speed internet, free wifi, and basic cable with HEAT movie channel.
[+]When do I put down a deposit?
We do not require a deposit. Instead, a pre-payment of $250 is due with the signed lease agreement. This amount will be subtracted from the first semester's rent, which is due with the same deadlines for tuition and fees. After making the pre-payment, the balance due will be $2,050. The second installment of $2,300 will be due in the spring. Please see the UAB Student Accounting deadlines for tuition and fees.
[+]What types of apartments/rooms are available?
Students may choose from 2 bedrooms/ 2 bath suites, or 3 bedrooms/ 3 bath suites. Both suite types are based on double-occupancy (2 students per bedroom). Each bedroom comes with a bathroom to share with your roommate only.

[+]Who is eligible to live at Blazer Hall?
Blazer Hall is designated for first-time freshmen at UAB. This is a unique living-and-learning environment with an emphasis on high academic achievement.
[+]If I am over 21, do I need to have a guarantor?
Yes. All Blazer Hall leases are required to have a guarantor. However, we only accept students who graduated from high school the same year they start college; therefore we do not house anyone over the age of 19 in our freshman residence hall. Upper-class housing can accommodate anyone over 19.
[+]What size are the beds?
Beds are Twin XL 39"L X 80"W. Sheets and accessories are available from most local and national retailers, including larger discount stores, department stores, and home/interior specialty shops.
[+]When can I move in?
Move-in day is August 15, 2009. Specific instructions for how to prepare for move-in will be sent to all students before move in.
[+]Can additional furniture be brought into the apartment?
Yes, if the furniture is safe and in good working condition, you may bring it in, depending on space. All units are leased as furnished rooms. Property-owned furniture must remain in the unit at all times. We do not allow lofts in Blazer Hall.
[+]What do I need to hook up my computer to the internet?
You will need the following:
1. A computer running a modern operating system such as Windows 98 or newer, Mac OS 8.5 or newer, or Linux.
2. An Ethernet card with an RJ-45 jack (data port). Usually, this is already built in to new computers. If not, you can purchase an Ethernet card from any computer accessories retailer. The RJ-45 jack looks similar to a standard phone jack, only larger. A telephone cord will not work.
3. Wireless Internet is also featured in Blazer Hall.
[+]Do I have to move out after the first semester?
Students living in Blazer Hall are free to stay during holidays; you are not required to move out.
[+]Is smoking allowed?
For the health and comfort of everyone, Blazer Hall is a 100% smoke-free/tobacco-free facility. There is a zero tolerance policy for tobacco (including chewing tobacco) and alcohol in all freshmen housing on campus. Violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary actions.
[+]Is alcohol allowed?
Blazer Hall is designated as an alcohol-free, substance-free facility. Alcohol and other drugs are not permitted, regardless of age.
[+]What if I need to cancel my lease?
Please read the lease carefully and be sure that Blazer Hall is right for you before signing. A lease is a binding contract. You can cancel your lease and receive your $250 pre-payment back until June 30, 2009. Beginning July 1, 2009, the $250 prepayment will be forfeited. Please notify our office in writing as soon as you know your plans have changed for the Fall 2009.
